Business News
Basin Plan - SDLAM Draft Determination submission
Submissions have now closed on the Murray-Darling Basin Authority's (MDBA) draft Sustainable Diversion Limit Adjustment Mechanism (SDLAM) findings.
The MDBA has found that some SDLAM projects have not been delivered as promised, and Basin governments will now need to decide how to respond.
Murray Irrigation's submission is available below.
In our submission, Murray Irrigation recommends the following:
- In the final package of advice that will go to the Federal Water Minister, Murray Watt, the MDBA should consider including a Plain English summary of what a SDLAM gap could mean for southern Basin irrigation communities (i.e. governments could choose to pursue further environmental water recovery).
- Suggestions for how SDLAM, and similar projects can be supported to continue. Our suggestions would also allow for the full benefits of these projects to be formally recognised under the Basin Plan, making any further environmental water recovery unnecessary.
The MDBA's final SDLAM advice is due with Minister Watt before 31 December 2026.

Latest NSW DCCEEW Water Allocation Announcement
The NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has announced yesterday (2 September) that there will be no change in allocations to General Security entitlements for the NSW Murray.
The total cumulative allocation to General Security entitlements remains at 30% for the 2026/27 water year.
You can read the full announcement below.

Recent changes to NSW Regulated Murray Water Sharing Plan
The Regulated Murray Water Sharing Plan (WSP) is currently the focus of review and remake by the NSW Government.
This work is a requirement under NSW legislation.
The new version of the WSP is scheduled to commence in July 2028, and a draft of the new WSP will be available for public review and comment in the coming months.
Ahead of this process, the NSW Government has recently made some changes to the existing Regulated Murray WSP, which it describes as 'administrative'.
A summary of these changes is available here and here.
A recent DCCEEW-NSW webinar explaining this process, and why it has been undertaken, can be viewed here.
Murray Irrigation staff are currently reviewing this material to ensure any potential negative implications are properly understood.
Identified risks that staff believe require attention will be incorporated into the Company's approach to the broader review/remake process scheduled for completion in 2028.
NSW Murray Valley Unregulated Water Sharing Plan
DCCEEW-NSW is currently undertaking work to determine if extraction rates are compliant with the Long-Term Average Annual Extraction Limit (LTAAEL) defined in the Unregulated Murray WSP. This will involve a three-step process:
- Determine a specific number for the LTAAEL, based on the existing definition in the WSP.
- Develop a method to assess current take.
- Commence compliance assessment.
Targeted consultation on this process is currently being undertaken for licence-holders who may be affected.
In-person sessions will be held in Deniliquin on the morning of Thursday 12 November and an online webinar will be held on the afternoon of Monday 16 November.
You can find out more, and register for either session here.
There is also a survey available at the above link. Completing it will help DCCEEW-NSW to undertake this particular piece of policy work.
