Meet Independent Board Director candidate - Sam Tainsh

Looking through a city and country lens
Agribusiness professional Sam Tainsh is looking to bring his unique blend of city and country perspectives to the Board of Murray Irrigation.
Mr Tainsh is one of two Board appointed Independent Directors seeking ratification at the Company's upcoming Annual General Meeting.
Together with his wealth of experience, he brings to the Board an important understanding of the diverse views and perceptions of irrigated agriculture.
“I live in Sydney and therefore see the city perspective, but I also have a good understanding from a country perspective," he said.
"I believe this can provide a lens that is outside the community and will offer value to the Murray Irrigation in Board discussions and decisions.”
Mr Tainsh spent most of his childhood in Deniliquin, the son of respected local community members John and Jill Tainsh.
He has farming in his ‘blood’, being related to the Henderson family, members of whom continue to farm in the Blighty/Warragoon district, where the family history stretches back more than a century.
“I have a strong connection to the area, with lots of cousins still farming there,” Mr Tainsh explained.
However, it is the many years he has spent working in agribusiness outside the region, and the skillsets he has developed as a result, that sets Mr Tainsh in great stead to make a positive contribution to the Murray Irrigation Board.

“My experience has provided me with a strong understanding of commodity markets, business performance, operational and asset management and the commercial challenges facing agricultural businesses," he said.
After leaving Deniliquin, Mr Tainsh studied agricultural economics before building a career in the grains industry. This included running a grains trading business before transitioning to operational roles in processing plants, overseeing significant plant expansions and IT integration and upgrade projects.
His career working in senior management within the agricultural supply chain, alongside his understanding of irrigated agriculture, was the foundation for Mr Tainsh’s appointment in October 2025 as an independent member of Murray Irrigation’s Water Risk Committee.
As a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), Mr Tainsh says he is familiar with responsibilities of Directors and how a Board must work together to fulfil governance responsibilities while achieving strategic objectives.
“I understand the importance of disciplined decision-making and balancing short-term performance with the long-term interests of an organisation such as Murray Irrigation, and its shareholders," he said.
“I believe effective Board leadership requires a clear strategic direction, strong financial and commercial oversight, constructive engagement with management and a willingness to challenge existing thinking when needed."
Mr Tainsh is particularly interested in supporting strategic growth, managing risk and ensuring Murray Irrigation remains responsive to changing conditions and the evolving needs of its shareholders.
He also appreciates the role of an Independent Director, who may look through a different lens in the decision-making process to a Shareholder Director, and recognises the manner in which they can complement each other to help build a stronger company.
"I believe effective Board leadership requires a clear strategic direction, strong financial and commercial oversight, constructive engagement with management and a willingness to challenge existing thinking when needed."

Mr Tainsh sees Australian farming as “innovative and adaptive”, and recognises Murray Irrigation and irrigated agriculture must continue to adapt with technology, farming practices, plant genetics and water use efficiency.
“I’m a curious person and I like to learn and understand how things work … how we can make them better," he said.
"I want things to be better, and for businesses and people to fulfil their potential.
“That’s my driver.”
