Sporting icons to feature at Barham men’s night

Two well-known Australian sportsmen will be among the guest speakers at a ‘Men of the Murray’ event being held next month in Barham.

Former AFL star Wayne Schwass and Australian Test cricketer Merv Hughes will feature on the night, alongside specialist general surgeon Dr Dan Fletcher and urologist Mr Stephen Lindsay.

The event will be held on Friday, October 2 from 6pm to 10pm at the Barham Football Club, and cost is only $10 per person. It is being organised by Quantum Medical Centre Barham, with support from cluBarham, Wakool Progress Association, Murray River Council, and Murray Irrigation through its annual community sponsorship program.

Those attending will be treated to an evening of sport, stories, health and straight-talking conversations about looking after yourself and your mates.

Quantum Medical Centre aims to raise awareness of men’s health topics that may not normally be spoken about, inform men what to look for, and to just start a conversation.

It is an area in which Wayne Schwass has become well-known since finishing a distinguished AFL career.

He is founder and Managing Director of PukaUp, a social enterprise committed to supporting better mental health outcomes for organisations, communities and individuals, and has spent the past two decades facilitating wellbeing conversations across the country.

On the football field Schwass was a champion wingman who made his senior debut for North Melbourne in 1988, winning the club champion award in both 1994 and 1995. He was vice captain to Wayne Carey and among the best players in the club’s 1996 premiership win over Sydney Swans.

Two years later he was traded to the Swans, where he won a best and fairest award and was named in the All-Australian side.

Merv Hughes represented Australia in 53 Test matches between 1985 and 1994, and also played 33 One Day Internationals. He was a crowd favorite, especially in front of the infamous Bay 13 at the MCG.

After his playing career, Hughes became an Australian selector, and in 2021 was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. He also tried his hand at acting, and has featured on television commercials and Channel Nine’s ‘Celebrity Overhaul’.

Schwass and Hughes will be joined on stage by the two Bendigo medical specialists, ensuring the night has lots of fun and laughs, but also some important messages.
