Murray Irrigation launches Learn to Swim program

23 October  2023

Murray Irrigation is encouraging children across the region to head to the pool this summer to learn valuable and lifelong water safety skills, with the launch of its 2023/24 Learn to Swim program.

The company has been sponsoring local children to participate in swimming and water safety lessons for 20 years.

The annual program is Murray Irrigation's most significant community funding initiative, and it is estimated that more than 20,000 children have been involved since its inception in 2003.

Year 2 students from Deniliquin South Primary School were among the hundreds of students across the region to participate in Murray Irrigation's Learn to Swim program last year.

Assistant School Principal, Ash Morris, says it was rewarding to watch the students' skills grow over the course of their 10-day intensive swimming program.

"The kids absolutely love mixing it up and getting out of the class and into the pool," Mr Morris said.

"With Deniliquin being a river town, the importance of water safety at an early age is vital.

"The continuity of 10 days in the water is not only great for the students' confidence and skills, but it also provides a great platform for their next

step of learning."

Murray Irrigation contributes $10 for every child in the region who completes the Learn to Swim program.

Murray Irrigation Chief Executive Officer, Ron McCalman, said the initiative reflects the company's commitment to the community and to keeping children safe around water.

“Living in an area where rivers, dams and irrigation channels are part of our everyday lives, water safety is a necessary skill for our children, which is why we provide the annual sponsorship for schools and swimming clubs in our area of operation,” Mr McCalman said.

Mr McCalman emphasised that learning to swim is an important and necessary skill for our children and cost should not be a barrier.

“As an irrigation water delivery company, we see it as our duty of care to help ensure members of our youngest generation remain safe and sound around water,” he said.
