Murray Irrigation 2023 community grants program up and running

21 April 2023

Murray Irrigation is inviting local community groups to apply for funding under its 2023 Community Sponsorship Program.

Now into its sixth year, the company’s annual grants initiative supports a broad range of projects and activities that promote community participation, safety and wellbeing within our region.

Last year’s program delivered funding to the tune of around $15,000 towards three locally-based community projects. These activities included the upgrade of athletics equipment at Finley, the enhancement of Deniliquin’s Blake Park Reserve, and the purchase of life saving medical equipment for use by the Barham community.

Leona McConnell, Marketing and Communications Officer at Western Murray Land Improvement Group, said they are grateful for generous sponsorship which has enabled the purchase of two defibrillators.

“These lifesaving pieces of equipment will benefit the community in an emergency," Leona said.

“One of the machines is displayed outside our offices at 27 Thule Street Barham with 24/7 public access. The other is displayed in our offices and is intended to be mobile, brought along to field days and other events where phone reception and medical attention may be limited or untimely.

“Community members and groups are also invited to borrow the mobile machine for upcoming events which can be done by visiting our offices.

“Thankfully, neither machine has been used since purchase. However, staff are trained to use the machines and it is a comfort to know that we will be prepared if someone in our community requires their use.”

As part of Murray Irrigation’s sponsorship activities, a further $15,000 has been allocated towards its long running annual Learn to Swim program.

CEO Ron McCalman said Murray Irrigation is proud to invest in local initiatives that contribute to the social, cultural and environmental needs of our region.

“We are delighted to be able to support innovative community-driven projects that benefit local people and, ultimately, help communities across our service footprint thrive,” Mr McCalman said.

“I would urge organisations and groups keen to make a positive difference in their local community to submit their applications by 29 May.”

Murray Irrigation’s annual Community Sponsorship Program is made possible through the support of the company’s customers.

The successful applicants are selected using a merit-based system, against principles which are aligned with the core values, goals and strategic direction of Murray Irrigation.
