Operational Update

Safety during Winter Works

Winter maintenance is critical to the effective functioning of Murray Irrigation's channel network during the irrigation season.

During the Winter Works period, there will be an increase in heavy machinery activity and vehicle movements across the Murray Irrigation footprint, particularly near channels.

Please be aware of, and comply with, safety signage and adhere to any changed road conditions, especially around bridges and during foggy, wet, or rainy conditions.

And please remember that even if you can’t see our work crews, it doesn’t mean they are not there.

Murray Irrigation is committed to the safety, health and wellbeing of all people involved in our business.

This includes members of the community, road users and the landholders where our works are planned.  Please let us know if you have any concerns, or report any issues, by calling us on 1300 138 265.

Barmah Narrow (formerly Barmah Choke) Trade - 1 July 2026

The Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), which manages the Barmah Narrows (formerly Barmah Choke), advised on 25 May 2026 that the opening trade balance on 1 July 2026 is expected to be approximately 24 gigalitres (GL).

This is around 15 GL less than last season.

Murray Irrigation will accept applications on WaterNSW Barmah Narrows trade forms from 9.00am Wednesday 1 July to 12 noon Thursday 2 July 2026 to enable processing and submission to WaterNSW.

WaterNSW advises Barmah Narrows trade applications will be open on Thursday 2 July 2026 from 7.00am to 2.00pm.

Eligible applications will then be processed by WaterNSW, as per the protocol established in 2025.

Business News

May Board meeting

Murray Irrigation held its latest Board meeting on Wednesday 27 May 2026.

This meeting covered a number of important elements including the ongoing implementation of Murray Irrigation's new fee structure (see the '2026/27 Fees and Prices' item below), as well as the 2027 Budget and Resource Management Strategy.

You can find more information in the below update from Murray Irrigation Chair Phil Snowden.

Chair Update - 28 May 2026

2026/27 Fees and Prices

As mentioned in the above Chair Update, the new fee structure as approved by the Board on 30 April 2026 will be implemented from 1 July 2026.

This fee structure will:

  • Remove fixed fees associated with Delivery Entitlements (DEs) - including the annual Asset Maintenance Renewal Reserve (AMRR) fee,
  • Increase the variable water delivery fee based on volume used, and
  • Align outlet fees to cost recovery.

The updated Fees and Prices Policy and the 2026/27 Schedule of Charges will be issued to customers before 17 June 2026, in line with legislated notice requirements.

With regard to outlets, Management has commenced discussions on the process for customers who wish to remove outlets. It is expected this will take the form of an EOI. Further information on this will be available in the coming months.

For further information on the new fee structure visit our
Fee Structure Review webpage.

EWON catch up

Murray Irrigation CEO Ron McCalman is pictured with EWON General Manager, Energy Transition and Expanding Jurisdiction, Stephanie Saill.

Murray Irrigation visited the Energy & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) last week to discuss key issues in preparation for new dispute resolution regulations that come into effect on 1 July 2026.

The Company has been working closely with EWON over the past 12 months on the implementation of this significant industry reform, which provides irrigation customers access to a free, fair and independent pathway for resolving complaints related to access to water supply and service delivery.

In this regard, EWON has released a customer fact sheet outlining:

  • Who can make a complaint
  • Issues that EWON can assist customers with (eg. service complaints, water access, billing disputes, metering, and more)
  • Matters that fall outside EWON's jurisdiction (eg. Government policy, criminal matters, setting of prices or charges, Governance or internal decision making of irrigation corporations).

EWON has a 'no wrong door approach' for matters that it can’t assist customers with. In such cases, it will refer customers to the most appropriate alternative organisation. This EWON customer fact sheet provides more information.

Representatives from EWON will be making a third visit to the footprint prior to the launch of the new scheme on 1 July 2026.

Murray Irrigation appreciates the open and collaborative approach EWON is taking to ensure the smooth implementation of the new arrangements, and looks forward to building on this strong working relationship for the benefit of the Company and our customers in the timely resolution of complaints.

For more information on irrigation-related complaints, visit EWON's webpage below.
