Murray Irrigation water policy specialist joins Peter Cullen Trust Fellowship

14 June 2023

Murray Irrigation water policy specialist, Michael Pisasale, has joined the ranks of the Peter Cullen Trust Fellows network after graduating from the organisation's acclaimed Science to Policy Leadership Program.

The ceremony for the 2023 graduating class took place at the Shine Dome in Canberra on 25 May, and featured Chief Executive of WaterAid Australia, Rosie Wheen, as guest speaker.

During the proceedings, Michael's cohort presented the major project they collaboratively worked on over the course of the program, before fielding questions from the audience. The project focused on the topic of green energy.

This year's Science to Policy Leadership Program drew together 17 water and environment industry professionals from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.

Michael underwent an intensive and competitive selection process to earn his place among the cohort.

He described his learning experience as both challenging and rewarding, admitting it pushed him outside his comfort zone at times.

"There are lots of different views and understandings about the way we manage water," Michael said.

"However, it is important that, as an industry, we work cohesively, and in a united way to achieve the best possible outcomes.

"This program has given me the skills and confidence to help to navigate the challenging issues that arise, particularly in the water policy space."

Michael was sponsored by Murray Irrigation to participate in the program.

He said he is grateful to work with a company that supports its staff to pursue further study and professional development opportunities.

Murray Irrigation CEO, Ron McCalman, congratulated Michael on successfully completing his learning journey.

"The leadership skills and learnings that Michael has gained by participating in the Peter Cullen Trust program will enable him to make a leading contribution to water policy conversations now and in the future," Ron said.

The Peter Cullen Trust is a not-for-profit organisation that works to bridge the gap between science and policy in the water sector through a special focus on delivering highly effective and regarded leadership programs for people working in the sector from around Australia.
