Sponsorship program opens – calling local community groups

Philip Endley, CEO Murray Irrigation, said the organisation is committed to investing in the regional community, and has been a long-term supporter of programs like the regional Learn to Swim program that has supported children locally since for over 20 years.

“Our company and staff are part of the community’s fabric and we strive to invest in worthwhile community projects whenever we can.

“At times, especially during drought, the support that we can provide is limited. However, with recent rain and healthy cattle and crops in tow, we’re pleased to be in a position to broaden our efforts this year.”

Southern Growers, a local not for profit grower group, is benefitting from the company’s support of their major research and development program – with a strong focus currently on a double cropping trial, set to be completed in January 2023.

Stephanie Chappell, Southern Growers Executive Officer, says, “the double cropping project is investigating the feasibility of growing rice and different winter crops in rotation. That is, growing four crops in two years on the same area. If successful this will lead to improved water use efficiency, better utilisation of irrigation layouts and ultimately increased profitability.”

“The program, conducted on the Finley Irrigation Research and Extension site, focuses on local farmers, and helps them to maximise irrigation productions. The water being donated from Murray Irrigation allows Southern Growers to reinvest profits for future research and trial projects,” she said.
