Murray Irrigation grant assists toy library revival

29 April 2024

The Berriquin Community Toy Library has made a successful comeback after a seven-year spell.

The volunteer-led organisation has used funding received through Murray Irrigation's annual Community Sponsorship Program to reopen its doors, much to the pleasure of local families and children.

Based in Finley, the Berriquin Community Toy Library services the communities of Finley, Berrigan, Tocumwal and Barooga.

The venture has been nothing short of a success according to committee secretary Anna Atkinson. The library's opening hours have even been extended to Saturdays, so a wider range of families can drop by for a play and a borrow.

"We have been really pleased with the uptake of members who have joined the toy library since its relaunch last June," Mrs Atkinson said.

"This is a service that has not been available to local families for over seven years.

"We continue to see growth in memberships and love seeing new faces join our toy community.

"We have been able to grow the range of toys available to our members through fundraising and grants."

The toy library has increased the availability of fun, interactive and educational toys and resources for local children to enjoy, while at the same time offering parents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to purchasing. The facility is also helping foster social support and community connections.

"We are incredibly grateful for the funds we received through Murray Irrigation's Sponsorship Program," Mrs Atkinson said.

"We would encourage other local groups to apply- no matter how big or small, new or old they may be.

"It has been a wonderful reflection of how our local community supports each other."

Murray Irrigation CEO, Ron McCalman, said the company is delighted to have been able to assist the committee revive this valuable community resource.

"With its combination of social, environmental, financial and educational benefits, this initiative certainly ticks all the boxes," Mr McCalman said.

Murray Irrigation's annual grants program is made possible through the support of its customers.

Applications for the company's 2024 Community Sponsorship Program open on 6 May.
