Meet MIL Project Assistant Cherie Vetesi

14 February 2024

Cherie Vetesi is one of the newest members of our dynamic Corporate Services team. Having recently graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Business, she is relishing the opportunity of putting the skills and knowledge she has gained through her tertiary study and many years working in the legal sector into action at Murray Irrigation.

What is your current role at Murray Irrigation and what does it entail?

My current role with Murray Irrigation is Project Assistant.

The role involves contributing to the development and delivery of projects within the corporate services team, including supporting record management, compliance, sustainability and licensing obligations, along with providing administrative support to the Company Secretary.

Having worked in the legal sector for most of your career to date, how are you finding your job at Murray Irrigation so far, and working in a new industry in general?

I hit the ground running, arriving at Murray Irrigation just before the 2023 Annual General Meeting, and quickly found a lot of my legal sector skills were transferrable into this role, especially those skills learned from assisting business clients with compliance and reporting obligations.

Of particular fascination to me has been learnings regarding

Environmental Protection Licensing requirements and the monitoring

and testing to meet those obligations. This is an entirely new area for me.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I like being able to offer a fresh perspective and utilise my legal skills,

while taking in all I can regarding the water industry. I am in awe of all

the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to allow Murray Irrigation

to deliver to its customers.

What is the greatest challenge?

The greatest challenge was taking on the vast amount of information to understand how Murray Irrigation operates in such a large footprint and just immersing myself in a whole new industry.

I have never shied away from a challenge, and all staff have been wonderfully accepting and encouraging of my desire to learn and get involved.

How would you describe your team's culture?

The culture in my team is second to none. We have a really great team

with a variety of skill sets and strengths which complement each other.

The internal culture of Murray Irrigation should be commended - it is

easily one of the best I have worked within.

You have just graduated from the University of New England with a Bachelor of Business. What prompted you to undertake your study and what value do you think your studies will bring to your role and to MIL as a whole?

I have always had a great interest in Business studies, and while I disappointed a few by not choosing to undertake a law degree, I instead chose to broaden my opportunities with a Business degree majoring in management, and undertook a number of law units as electives.

Undertaking mature age study while working full time was a tough gig, but if anyone is ever interested in further education I would strongly encourage them to take the leap. The younger cohort in my classes really relied on the learned experiences of the mature aged students in giving them real life examples from which they could draw on.

This degree gave me a really good basis to apply legal principles to business and gave me a sturdy comprehension of good governance in the corporate world. Combined with many years of experience in a boutique business law advice firm, I am now excited to be able to put my skills to work within my role in Murray Irrigation.

What do you love most about living in a regional community such as Deniliquin?

I grew up in a small rural dairy farming area in Victoria, so I love the pace of Deniliquin. It has much to offer in the close-knit community for our children who all participate in various sports. I enjoy the friendliness of the town. It really reminds me of home and there is a nice comfort knowing we are raising our children here.
