Meet MIL Accountant Ayanda Magwenjere

6 December 2023

What is your current role at Murray Irrigation and what does it

entail?

I work as an Accountant for Murray Irrigation. I have been with Murray Irrigation for five years.

My work mainly revolves around financial reporting/management

accounts. The purpose of management accounts is to provide users

such as our managers, executives, Board Directors and other stakeholders with financial information that enables them to achieve effective decision-making.

The reports include the company’s financial position, financial performance, and cash flows.

What do you enjoy most about your job and what is the greatest challenge?

Management accounts are an important communication tool that gives Murray Irrigation stakeholders the ability to make decisions. I enjoy preparing them every month because of the level of value they contribute to Murray Irrigation and its financial goals.

The process of putting them together can be challenging because of the amount of attention to detail required. These reports must be complete, neutral, understandable, reliable, and free from error. I would say this is one of the best tasks I have learned at Murray Irrigation so far.

You work remotely. Where are you based and how often do you get

to catch up with the team in person?

I am based in Melbourne, and I spend around one week a month in Deniliquin.

What do you enjoy best about these in-person catch-ups?

With working from home, you can miss out on certain interactions such

as greeting or chatting with colleagues in the corridor or office kitchen.

It’s always great to see everyone in person.

What does having the flexibility of being able to work remotely mean

to you?

I am still as productive as working from the office (thanks to the ICT     department for providing all the resources that I need).

What I love about working remotely is the social things I can do outside of work, for example catching up with friends. I am glad I can add value to Murray Irrigation from 255km away.

How would you describe your team's culture?

The finance department works as a team to achieve Murray Irrigation’s objectives and meet its company values.

We provide different types of services to Murray Irrigation’s stakeholders such as billing, payments to suppliers, payroll, and reporting on the financial data that contributes to decision-making.

I would describe the team culture as collaborative, supportive, friendly, and motivating.
