Murray Irrigation welcomes investigative water report

Murray Irrigation has welcomed the NSW Government report into the allegations of irregular water use aired by the ABC’s Four Corners program in July.

Murray Irrigation Chief Executive Officer Michael Renehan said the report by water policy expert Ken Matthews has made a number of recommendations that support Murray Irrigation’s investment in best practice metering.

When Ken Matthews calls for a systemic fix and system-wide reform, Murray Irrigation’s closed system more than meets Matthews’ recommendations.

“Many of Matthews’ recommendations have been industry policy for some time. Our colleagues within the irrigation industry have been calling for increased transparency, compliance and policing for many decades, well before the Murray Darling Basin Plan eventuated.

“We’re confident of beneficial relations with any new water access regulator and we’ll continue to contribute to the development of water reform policy, that ensures equity and generates confidence in commercial water users.

“As investigations continue we are confident we will see further positive recommendations put forward. Already, this is an encouraging result for Murray Irrigation and we look forward to continuing our productive relationship with the NSW Government”, Mr Renehan said.
