Murray Irrigation hosts USA irrigators
A group of irrigators from the United States of America were in Deniliquin on Wednesday 24 February as part of an Australian irrigation tour.
The tour was hosted by Rubicon Water and included a stop at the Deniliquin RSL Club for a presentation from Murray Irrigation.
The group included about 10 irrigators, as well as a prominent Californian engineering consultant and the editor of a national irrigation magazine, Irrigation Leader.
There were representatives from the Burley, A&B and Pioneer irrigation districts in Idaho, both South and East Columbia Basins in Washington and the Frenchman Cambridge Irrigation District in Nebraska.
Murray Irrigation’s presentation included a brief history on the company itself, the region and the local irrigation industry, as well as details on the local water ordering system and the Private Irrigation Infrastructure Operators Program (PIIOP). Murray Irrigation PIIOP Project Engineer, Jarryd Pearce, said the visitors showed great interest in local irrigation practices.
“Their system is very different to ours, so they were really interested in how everything operates and how our customers access water,” he said.
“There were plenty of questions about water entitlements, metering and water restrictions. “Because they have access to plenty of water, their system is more about control, where as ours is focussed on efficiency.”
From Deniliquin, the tour moved on to the Coleambally irrigation district.
